5 Household Chores That You May Be Doing Wrong
Many people do household chores a certain way. It may have been the way that they were taught by their parents, or maybe they came up with it themselves. It’s something we don’t often think about. While some methods can work, they may not be the “right” way to clean efficiently and avoid damaging utensils, appliances, and other household objects that you use regularly. Read on to learn about five common chores that many people get wrong.
Not Cleaning Out the Humidifier:
Many households use a humidifier to eliminate excess moisture that can cause mould to grow. That’s a good thing – but only if the appliance is well maintained. It’s easy to forget that the humidifier itself needs to be serviced once in a while. According to the Mayo Clinic, a contaminated humidifier can cause a healthy person to experience flu symptoms and lung infections.
To clean, change the water and filter as recommended by the manufacturer. You can also clean the appliance every few days with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.
Ignoring the Space Behind the Toilet Seat:
The toilet ranks among the worst things to have to clean in most homes. No one likes doing it, but everyone hates what happens if you don’t clean it even more. When completing this chore, the focus is usually on the tank, lid, and bowl. These are important areas that deserve attention, but there is a little space behind the seat that is often neglected.
Due to its position, this is a prime spot for human waste and other unpleasant substances to accumulate. The easiest way to take care of the problem is with cleaner and a rolled up paper towel. Be thorough to prevent mold and bacteria growth in the loo.
Shoving Knives in the Dishwasher:
Dishwashers are a modern marvel to anyone who has spent time scrubbing plates and bowls at the kitchen sink. They are great for almost anything you use to cook with or eat on, but they aren’t great for knives.
Cleaning your knives in the dishwasher can cause them to become blunt. It can also cause rust, which means you’ll have to replace them sooner. The best thing to do is to hand wash knives while everything else goes in the dishwasher.
Leaving Bedsheets on Too Long:
Bedsheets play a role in getting a good night’s rest. We spend approximately one third of our lives sleeping. Even though we aren’t moving much, we can still leave behind dead skin cells, dust, and other debris. Unfortunately, this is one chore that doesn’t get done as often as it should in many households.
The sheets should be changed once a month at the very minimum. It’s not ideal, but ok. Replacing them once every couple weeks is preferred. If you eat food in bed, then you should plan to change the sheets once every few days.
Not Cleaning the Coffee Maker:
Did you know that mold could be growing in your coffee maker right now? This appliance is easy to forget. We often assume that because we use it to make coffee, the liquid moving through it must keep it clean. The reality is that mold will start to grow if the appliance isn’t cleaned regularly.
You should wash the lid, carafe, and filter basket daily with warm water and soap. You can clean the machine with vinegar once a month. Taking care of your appliances will keep you healthy and allow them to last longer.
